The region of Alnwick and Haldimand is a relatively larger area that encompasses smaller communities and villages and is south of Peterborough and closely neighbours Cobourg. It is one of the few townships in Ontario that still have an Indian reserve within its boundaries. The major cottage towns in the area are Roseneath and Grafton. What makes this region particularly convenient for cottaging is that it's right in between Rice Lake and Lake Ontario and there are a variety of creeks that run through the township. Beautiful thick forests, meadows, marshes, and rolling hills are what you'll find here along with easy access to the water.

If you're looking to be closer to the water, particularly Lake Ontario, then you want to be in Grafton. You can appreciate the view of the water by foot, car, bike using the Waterfront Trail, where you will be able to make a pit stop to the Newautin Nature Sanctuary, a wetland preservation area. The area is also laden with creeks and streams, and if you're a lover of trout or salmon, there are some great spots, such as Wicklow Beach boat launch where you can fish. Grafton is a place to stop and take time to admire nature. There is an enchanting wooded area popular with hikers called Peter's Woods. It is highly recommended to visit when the leaves are entirely green in the summer or mid-October when they are turning colour.

Roseneath, a town characterized by rural features, has become very popular with families for its historic carousel, which is still in use. The carousel building was established in 1906, and over the years a group of volunteers organized together to restore the building and the ride. Today, it is open to the public, and it stands as a beautiful historical piece, but also as a lovely attraction to visit with the family. It is open on Sundays and during the holidays from 1 pm to 3 pm. Other family-friendly events you can find are the Car, Truck and Tractor Show in July and the Roseneath Fair in September.
