Rice Lake is a beautiful shallow lake situated in southeastern Ontario near Peterborough and Northumberland County and is under a two-hour drive from Toronto and a three-hour trip from Ottawa. It is advantageously positioned to make it an accessible area for cottaging without too far of a trek. Historically, the lake earned its name from the wild black rice beds that naturally grew over the lake due to the shallow marshes. The lake continues to boast a healthy ecosystem and supports a diverse and large quantity of fish and is famous for Pickerel, Bass, Pan Fish, Walleye, Bluegill, Muskie, and Perch. Wither your finishing in the summer or Ice fishing in the winter it is indeed a fisherman's dream. It is no surprise that some of the popular events and activities in the area are about fishing since it's an activity that is done all year round. Family and kids can enjoy the lake for fun, but is also popular among professionals due to the variety of fishing competitions held at various levels such as the Walleye Tournament, the Crappie Derby, or the RLTA Annual Fisherman's Challenge (Big Fish Competition) to name a few. If you are planning on fishing and you haven’t done so in a while or a brand new to the sport, don't forget to pick up a fishing license which you can pick up at your local Canadian Tire or from most Fishing Equipment stores. Additionally, if you're planning to bring your fish back home, know you fish limit and remember your icebox or cooler. You can buy ice from the marinas to keep your fish fresh!

Boating and water sports are also common activities that cottagers and visitors often do on summer days. Just like fishing, there are many competitions that you can take part in on Rice Lake, like the Peterborough Power Boat Race which is a full weekend event filled with family entertainment. The centre of the lake is especially favourable for tubing and water sports such as Jet skiing, kiteboarding, water-skiing, and weight boarding. If you're fond of cruising, the lakes and the Trent system serves as a gateway to many beautiful scenic towns and small islands with nearby amenities so you can boat in comfort and peace of mind. The scenery to enjoy while boating, kayaking or canoeing is something to experience that words cannot describe. It is relaxing, decompressing, and calming where you get to see unbelievably picturesque views.

Apart from the water, the area offers exceptional golfing, sightseeing, food, festivals, and events all year round. Additionally, there are mature top rated trails on Rice Lake used for hiking, walking, running, bicycling, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, dirt bike trails on land and Rice Lake Ontario annual dirt bike race on ice. Some famous festivals that are held throughout the year are the Harwood Waterfront Festival in July, the Roseneath Fall Fair in September, Snowfest Winter Carnival in January, and Family Ice Fishing Day in February. If none of these peaks your interest, there are so many places to explore! Many of the little towns have unique local shopping, food, restaurants and local tourist attractions, such as the Lang Pioneer Village Museum, Zim Art Gallery, Roseneath Carousel, Peterborough Lift Locks, Vineyards, and the Ranney Gorge Suspension Bridge. At Rice Lake and the Kawarthas, there is no room for boredom. Take your time to unwind and enjoy your surroundings. You're here to relax, life in cottage country is slow. Enjoy the view and allow for some spontaneity during your daily planning.

Don't feel awkward about smiling or saying hello to those that pass you by as you go about your day. It's normal in smaller towns to welcome and greet everyone. They may stop to ask you if you're new in town as they are genuinely interested in getting to know and help you. When on the water in your boat all the locals will wave at you while passing by. Be friendly and wave back!
Remember to drive slowly on cottage roads. Ask locals or shop owners questions or recommendations, they are happy to help. Don't be afraid to start conversations with those around you. You never know, you may find new cottage friends! Since people aren't in a rush, it's no bother to stop and chat.
Lastly, remember that sound and noise travels long distances on the lake. So if you're playing loud music in the middle of the night by your private dock, be mindful of other cottage neighbours! Savour the moments.
